Eligibility criteria
Passed Class 12 (10+2) or equivalent from a recognised board. Age 18–27 years, with relaxations for OBC (+3), SC/ST (+5), PwD, and ex-servicemen. Some Data Entry Operator posts in specific departments may require a Science stream with Maths at 12th.
Should you attempt SSC CHSL?
Attempt it if
- Class 12 pass-outs who need stable earnings early — CHSL posts start around ₹25,000–35,000 gross per month with central-government security at age 19–20
- Students planning to study alongside work: clerical posts leave room for evening degrees and later promotions or CGL attempts from inside the system
- First-generation aspirants for whom a central-government job meaningfully changes family finances — the degree can come later; the post cannot always wait
Think twice if
- Students with the marks and family support for a strong degree path — a good B.Tech/B.Sc/B.Com usually out-earns the clerical track within 5 years
- Anyone who dislikes routine desk work; LDC/DEO roles are repetitive processing jobs by design, and the day-to-day does not change quickly
- Those unwilling to build typing speed seriously — the skill test eliminates otherwise-qualified candidates every cycle
Exam pattern
Two computer-based tiers. Tier 1: 100 questions, 200 marks, 60 minutes, −0.50 negative marking. Tier 2: objective modules with −1 negative marking on MCQs, plus a qualifying Typing / Data Entry Speed Test. Final merit is based on Tier 2.
Cutoff trends
One of India's largest exams — well over 20–30 lakh applicants for a few thousand posts. Cut-offs depend on category and post preference; DEO grades in some departments carry higher cut-offs. The Tier 2 score plus the qualifying skill test decide final selection.

What selection actually takes
Well over 20–30 lakh apply for a few thousand posts — on paper one of India's harshest ratios. In practice, the field thins the same way as CGL: candidates clearing mock Tier-1 consistently sit in a much smaller serious pool. Tier 2 decides merit, and the typing/data-entry skill test is a hard qualifier — practising it late is the most common preventable failure. Cut-offs vary sharply by category and post; DEO posts in technical departments close higher.

Full cost of an attempt
The form costs ₹100 (waived for women and SC/ST). Full preparation is possible under ₹10,000 with online material and a test series. The bigger consideration is opportunity cost at 18: a CHSL cycle takes 6–12 months, and the same syllabus base serves CGL three years later after graduation. Many toppers treat CHSL as the early-security option and CGL as the upgrade path — that sequencing is legitimate and common.
How to prepare (coaching vs self-study)
The syllabus is 10+2-level and overlaps ~80% with CGL at slightly lower depth. Arithmetic speed and English accuracy decide Tier 1; previous-year papers are the core practice material. Start typing practice (English 35 wpm / Hindi 30 wpm targets, or the DEO speed standard) in month one, not after Tier 2 — a free typing tutor 20 minutes a day is enough. If college is an option in parallel, take it: the post allows study, and a degree unlocks CGL and departmental promotions.

If it doesn't work out
The same preparation feeds SSC MTS and GD (lower posts), state clerical exams, railway NTPC 12th-level posts, banking clerk exams (after graduation), and police constable exams in many states. If two cycles fail, continue the degree and re-enter through CGL — the aptitude base compounds rather than expires. The real risk to avoid is stalling: keep either a course or a job running alongside attempts so the years produce something regardless of results.

Q: Should I do CHSL after 12th or finish my degree and attempt CGL?
If family finances need income now, CHSL first is rational: the post is secure, allows evening study, and internal or CGL upgrades exist. If you can afford three more years, CGL posts pay roughly double at entry with faster progression — the degree route usually wins when it is affordable.
Q: How hard is the typing test really?
It fails prepared candidates every cycle because they start late. The standards (roughly 35 wpm English / 30 wpm Hindi, or the DEO key-depressions norm) are reachable with 2–3 months of daily 20-minute practice. Start in month one and it becomes a non-issue.
Q: What is the actual work of an LDC or DEO?
File movement, data entry, record keeping, and routine correspondence in a ministry or department. It is stable, predictable, and unglamorous. Promotions to UDC and section-officer grades come with years and departmental exams — the ceiling rises for those who keep studying.
