Important dates
Eligibility criteria
Passed Class 12 (10+2) or equivalent from a recognised board. Age 18–27 years, with relaxations for OBC (+3), SC/ST (+5), PwD, and ex-servicemen. Some Data Entry Operator posts in specific departments may require a Science stream with Maths at 12th.
Exam pattern
Two computer-based tiers. Tier 1: 100 questions, 200 marks, 60 minutes, −0.50 negative marking. Tier 2: objective modules with −1 negative marking on MCQs, plus a qualifying Typing / Data Entry Speed Test. Final merit is based on Tier 2.
Syllabus overview
Tier 1 (common): General Intelligence, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, English Language — 25 questions each (200 marks)
Quantitative Aptitude: arithmetic, mensuration, basic algebra and geometry, data interpretation (10+2 level)
General Awareness: current affairs, history, geography, polity, general science
English: grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, sentence structure
Tier 2: module-based objective papers (Maths & Reasoning; English & General Awareness; Computer Knowledge) plus a Typing / Data Entry Speed Test
Posts & departments
Cutoff trends
One of India's largest exams — well over 20–30 lakh applicants for a few thousand posts. Cut-offs depend on category and post preference; DEO grades in some departments carry higher cut-offs. The Tier 2 score plus the qualifying skill test decide final selection.
Preparation tip
6–12 months; suitable straight after 12th. Build typing speed early for Data Entry Operator posts of dedicated preparation is recommended. Start with the official syllabus and previous year papers.
