Elite salary ceiling

Hardest truth

The exams are the real filter.

Actuarial Science uses mathematics, statistics, economics, and finance to price risk. In India, students usually enter the professional actuarial route through ACET and Institute of Actuaries of India membership, often alongside B.Sc Statistics, B.Com, Economics, Engineering, or MBA.

ACET 2026–27: dates, fee, paper pattern and pass mark

ACET (Actuarial Common Entrance Test) is run by the Institute of Actuaries of India (IAI). A pass lets you register as an IAI student member.

IAI held ACET on 13 June 2026 and holds the next one on 5 December 2026 (10 am to 1 pm). December forms close on 4 November at 3 pm; results are due on 16 December. 2027 dates were not out by 15 October 2026; expect the same June and December pattern.

  • Fee: ₹500 for June 2026, as per IAI’s notice. Some sites quote ₹3,000 or “free”; check your sitting’s notice.
  • Paper: 3 hours, 70 multiple-choice questions, 100 marks. Maths 30, Statistics 30, Data Interpretation 15, English 15, Logical Reasoning 10.
  • Pass mark: 50%, with no negative marking. A pass stays valid for 3 years.
  • No ACET is needed for qualified CAs, CMAs and CSs, IIM graduates, MBA (Finance) holders with 60% or more, and some ISI degree holders (B.Math Hons, M.Stat, M.Math, M.S. Quantitative Economics).

Which IAI papers do you need, what do they cost and how many pass?

Associate status needs ten papers: CS1, CS2, CM1, CM2, CB1, CB2, CB3 and CP1 to CP3. Fellowship needs 13 subjects, including Specialist Principles (SP) and Specialist Advanced (SA) papers, plus 3 years of work-based actuarial experience and the India Fellowship Seminar.

There are two exam sessions a year (the November 2026 session starts on 24 October; a May 2027 timetable is posted), so each failed paper costs about six months. Since November 2025, two-paper subjects such as CS1 need 30% in each paper and 50% overall. IAI lists 7,187 student members and 654 Fellows.

Which actuarial degrees give IAI exemptions, and what do they cost?

A degree saves papers only if IAI accredits it, and usually only above a set mark. IAI’s 2024–25 list includes R A Podar College (B.Com Actuarial Studies), Bishop Heber College (M.Sc: CS1 and CB1), Mar Athanasius College (M.Sc: CS1) and IIRM (PGDM). You claim exemptions after joining IAI; each CS or CM exemption costs ₹5,000.

A qualified CA is exempt from CB1, CB2, CB3 and SP0. Rashtriya Raksha University’s M.Sc in Actuarial Science got UK (IFoA) accreditation in August 2025.

Who hires actuarial students in India?

Every insurer needs an Appointed Actuary under IRDAI’s Appointed Actuary Regulations, 2017, and the post needs an IAI Fellow. Reinsurers hire too: Swiss Re’s Bengaluru postings ask for at least two passed exams for an Actuarial Analyst with 0–2 years’ experience, and five (CM1 compulsory) for a Senior Actuarial Analyst with 2–3 years.

Who should not choose Actuarial Science

  • Anyone who sees the degree as the finish line. Fellowship needs 13 subjects and 3 years of actuarial work, and in May 2025 only 9.2% passed CS2 and 22.67% passed CM1.
  • Students weak in maths and statistics. They carry 60 of ACET’s 100 marks, and the CS and CM papers build on them.
  • Anyone who wants exams to stop at the first job. Swiss Re wants five passed exams for a senior analyst with 2–3 years’ experience.
  • Students counting on a government job. LIC’s 2025 notice had 30 AAO (Actuarial) posts for the whole country.
  • Families picking a private actuarial degree for its name. Without IAI accreditation it may give no exemptions.

Often confused

ACET vs the actuarial exams: does passing ACET make me an actuary?
No. ACET only lets you register as an IAI student member. The qualification is the 13 subjects after it, plus work experience.
Associate (AIAI) vs Fellow (FIAI): what is the difference?
An Associate has cleared the ten CS, CM, CB and CP papers. A Fellow has 13 subjects including Specialist papers, 3 years of actuarial work and the India Fellowship Seminar. Only a Fellow can be an insurer’s Appointed Actuary.
Actuary vs CA vs CFA: which suits me?
CA covers accounts, audit and tax, with 2 years of articleship; new CAs averaged ₹13.30 LPA at ICAI’s April–May 2026 campus drive. CFA is an investment qualification: three exam levels and 4,000 hours of relevant work. A qualified CA is exempt from four IAI papers.

Cleared exams, internships, Excel/R/Python, and insurance-domain knowledge drive off-campus hiring.

Eligibility

ACET is open to students who have appeared for or passed 10+2 or higher qualifications. Strong mathematics and numeracy are essential. Professional qualification requires clearing multiple actuarial exams after student membership.

Daily reality

Actuarial analysts work on spreadsheets, statistical models, pricing, reserving, risk assumptions, and regulatory reports. Exams continue alongside the job.

Work culture

Insurance and consulting work is usually structured, with deadline pressure around valuations and regulatory cycles.

Competition

High among serious math students, but the total qualified-actuary pool is small.

Saturation

The market is niche. Good candidates with exams cleared are valued; casual degree-only students struggle.

Layoffs

Insurance risk roles are relatively stable; consulting roles vary with client demand.

AI disruption

AI can automate modelling support, but accountable risk assumptions and regulatory sign-off remain specialist work.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Is ACET compulsory for actuarial science?

ACET is the common entry route for Institute of Actuaries of India student membership unless you qualify through an exempted route listed by IAI.

Q: Can commerce students become actuaries?

Yes, if they are strong in mathematics and statistics. Commerce plus actuarial exams can work well for insurance and finance roles.

Q: How long does it take to become an actuary?

There is no fixed time. Associate needs ten IAI papers, with two exam sessions a year, so each failed paper costs about six months. Fellowship adds Specialist papers and 3 years of actuarial work.

Q: Is actuarial science better than CA?

Actuarial is more math/risk/insurance focused and has fewer seats. CA is broader in audit, tax, accounting, and finance. Choose based on strengths.

Q: When is ACET 2027?

Not announced as of 15 October 2026. The 2026 sittings were on 13 June and 5 December; check actuariesindia.org.

Q: What is the ACET exam fee?

₹500 for the June 2026 sitting, as per IAI’s notice. Some third-party pages still show ₹3,000 or “free”.

Q: How many papers are there to become an actuary in India?

13 subjects for Fellowship, plus 3 years of actuarial work and the India Fellowship Seminar. Ten papers make you an Associate.

Q: What is an actuarial student’s salary in India?

About ₹4–7 LPA with 1–3 papers passed and ₹10–15 LPA with 4–7, according to a February 2026 Society of Actuaries article. Glassdoor’s June 2026 average for actuarial analysts is ₹7.01 lakh a year.
