NDA 2027 exam dates and eligibility: who can apply?
NDA I 2026 was held on 12 April and NDA II 2026 on 13 September 2026. The NDA II written result came out on 9 October 2026; qualifiers must register for the SSB on joinindianarmy.nic.in by 23 October 2026.
UPSC’s 2027 calendar lists NDA I 2027 on 11 April 2027 (notification 2 December 2026, last date 22 December 2026). NDA II 2027 is on 19 September 2027 (notification 12 May 2027). UPSC says these dates can change.
NDA II 2026 offered 394 seats: Army 208, Navy 42, Air Force 120 and 24 for the Naval Academy 10+2 cadet entry. That course starts on 1 July 2027.
- Age: about 16½ to 19½. NDA I 2026 needed a birth date between 1 July 2007 and 1 July 2010; NDA II 2026, between 2 January 2008 and 1 January 2011.
- Unmarried men and women can apply. The first 17 women cadets graduated from NDA in May 2025.
- Air Force, Navy and the Naval Academy entry need Physics, Chemistry and Maths in Class 12. The Army wing takes any stream. Class 12 students can apply.
- A wrong answer loses one-third of that question’s marks. The SSB interview adds 900 marks to the 900-mark written exam.
- Height: at least 157 cm (152 cm for women, Gorkhas and hill candidates from the North East, Garhwal and Kumaon; 163 cm for Air Force flying).
- Fee: ₹100. SC/ST candidates, women and specified wards of JCOs, NCOs and ORs are exempt.
Is NDA free? What families actually pay
There is no tuition fee. The government pays for training, accommodation, books, uniform, boarding and medical treatment. Parents pay pocket money and private expenses, which UPSC says are normally not expected to exceed ₹3,000 a month.
Families do need cash on joining day. Amounts below are from the joining instructions for the 155th NDA course (began January 2026).

What is a Lieutenant’s salary after NDA in 2026?
The Army, Navy and Air Force share one 7th CPC pay matrix. Officers up to Brigadier also get Military Service Pay (MSP) of ₹15,500 a month, and DA is worked out on basic pay plus MSP. DA has been 60% since 1 January 2026.
The table uses entry basic pay, so treat it as a floor: increments, HRA and other allowances add to it, and income tax comes off. The 8th Pay Commission, set up on 3 November 2025, has until about May 2027 to report.

Navy and Air Force officers of equal rank are on the same pay level. Promotion years are years of reckonable commissioned service.
Who should not choose NDA / Defence
- Anyone who wants to fly but has already failed the Air Force CPSS pilot test. It is taken only once, and a fail rules out the flying branch.
- Anyone shorter than 157 cm (152 cm for women) without a regional relaxation. Height is a fixed standard in the notification.
- Army aspirants who want a B.Tech. NDA usually puts Army cadets in Science, Computer Science or Social Science streams; B.Tech is for Navy and Air Force cadets.
- Anyone who may want to quit midway. A cadet who resigns or refuses a commission must repay training costs, jointly with guarantors.

- NDA vs CDS: which entry should I aim for?
- NDA is for Class 12 students aged about 16½ to 19½, and the degree is done at NDA. CDS is for graduates: IMA takes unmarried men aged 19 to 24; women join through CDS only for Short Service Commission at OTA Chennai (18 seats in CDS II 2026). Both lead to Lieutenant pay at Level 10.
- NDA vs TES (10+2 Technical Entry): what is the difference?
- TES is the Army’s other entry after Class 12. There is no written exam: shortlisting uses 60%+ in PCM and the JEE Main score, followed by the SSB. Training lasts four years with a B.E./B.Tech, then Permanent Commission as Lieutenant. TES-57 forms are open from 14 October to 12 November 2026, for unmarried men only.
- NDA Navy wing vs Naval Academy 10+2 cadet entry
- Both are filled through the same UPSC NDA & NA exam. Navy-wing cadets spend three years at NDA Khadakwasla with Army and Air Force cadets. The 24 Naval Academy 10+2 cadet entry seats train for four years at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala.

NDA training (3 years) is physically and mentally brutal — 5 AM PT, academics, drill, weapons training. Post-commissioning, life is field postings (Siachen, Kargil, NE counter-insurgency), frequent transfers (every 2–3 years), and family separations.
Work culture
Strict discipline, hierarchy, and physical fitness throughout career. Frequent postings, often to remote/sensitive locations. Family postings are not guaranteed. Family healthcare and education benefits are excellent.
