Eligibility criteria
Bachelor's degree with minimum 50% marks or equivalent CGPA (45% for SC/ST/PwD). Final-year students can also apply provisionally, subject to producing proof of graduation within the deadline specified by the IIM CAT notification.
Should you attempt CAT?
Attempt it if
- Graduates with 1–3 years of work experience targeting a top-20 B-school — work-ex plus a strong percentile is the highest-ROI combination
- Final-year students with strong academics (IIMs weight 10th/12th/graduation marks in shortlisting, not just CAT)
- People who specifically want the placement machinery of IIM A/B/C/L-tier campuses — that machinery, not the MBA syllabus, is what the fee buys
Think twice if
- Anyone doing MBA as a default escape from a job they dislike, without a target role — an expensive two years to postpone the same question
- Students who would only join a B-school ranked below the level their current career already reaches; a ₹15–25 lakh fee at a mid-tier college often returns less than staying employed
- Candidates with weak academics (below ~80% in 10th/12th) targeting only old IIMs — their shortlisting weights make a 99.5 percentile necessary but possibly insufficient; broaden the college list first

3 sections — VARC (24 Qs, 40 min), DILR (22 Qs, 40 min), QA (22 Qs, 40 min). Total: 68 questions, 120 minutes. Sectional time limits.
Cutoff trends
IIM A/B/C shortlist: 99–99.5 percentile. IIM L/K/I: 95–98 percentile. Good MBA: 85+ percentile. Score varies each year with difficulty.

What selection actually takes
Roughly 3 lakh candidates write CAT. A 99+ percentile is table stakes for IIM A/B/C shortlists for General-category male engineers (the largest, most penalised pool); 95–98 opens newer IIMs and strong non-IIMs like MDI and SPJIMR; 85–94 is workable at good tier-2 schools — but check their *median* placement salary against fees before joining. The interview stage filters heavily on academics, work experience, and communication, so percentile alone decides less than coaching ads suggest.

Full cost of an attempt
CAT registration is around ₹2,500 (check the current notification). Coaching runs ₹30,000–80,000 for classroom programmes; online test series alone cost ₹2,000–8,000 and are the highest-value spend. The real money question is the B-school fee that follows: ₹23–28 lakh at old IIMs, ₹10–20 lakh at newer IIMs and private schools — compare that against the school's audited median (not highest) package before committing.
How to prepare (coaching vs self-study)
CAT is a speed-and-selection exam over Class-10-level maths and reading. Six focused months are enough for most graduates: two months of concept refresh, then mocks — at least 25–30 full mocks with written analysis of every sitting. VARC improves by reading dense editorial prose daily, not by tricks. Working candidates should protect mock frequency over syllabus completeness; DILR set-selection judgement comes only from mock volume.

If it doesn't work out
A modest percentile is not a verdict on ability — CAT normalisation is brutal on the engineer-heavy pool. Realistic moves: take XAT/NMAT/SNAP/CMAT scores seriously (several good schools sit outside CAT), retake next year *while employed* (work experience improves both the profile and the interview), or skip the MBA and grow through role changes — many product, sales, and analytics careers out-earn mid-tier MBA outcomes without the fee. Avoid joining a weak B-school just because the year was "invested."
Frequently asked questions
Q: Is CAT worth it without work experience?
Freshers do get into IIMs, but interviews and post-MBA placements both favour 1–3 years of work. If you are a fresher with an average profile, working two years first usually improves the school you get and what you extract from it.
Q: What percentile do I actually need?
For old-IIM shortlists as a General-category engineer, treat 99+ as the working floor. For newer IIMs and strong private schools, 92–98. Below 85, join a school only after checking its fee against median placement — many are a net loss.
Q: Is coaching necessary for CAT?
No — a disciplined mock series plus daily reading covers most of it. Coaching helps people who need external structure. Whatever you choose, 25+ analysed mocks matter more than any classroom hour.
Q: MBA now or UPSC/govt exams — how do I choose?
They reward different temperaments: MBA pays back fastest for people who enjoy corporate targets and mobility; government roles trade peak salary for security and social standing. Splitting preparation across both usually produces neither — pick one primary track for the year.
