How do you get a BDS seat in 2026–27?
Every BDS seat is filled on NEET UG rank. In 2026 the 3 May exam was held again on 21 June (the re-NEET), and results came on 16 July. About 11.21 lakh candidates qualified, at the 50th percentile for General and the 40th for OBC, SC and ST.
You must be 17 by 31 December 2026, with no upper age limit. On 10 September 2026 the National Dental Commission also told counselling authorities that NEET is not enough: General candidates need 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Biotechnology together in Class 12.
The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) fills the 15% All India Quota in government colleges plus deemed and central university seats; state cells fill the rest. Round 1 opened on 5 August 2026.

The Army Dental Corps 2026 short service drive (37 posts, forms until 22 October 2026) shortlists on NEET MDS 2026 and asks for 55% in final-year BDS.

At the central DA rate of 60% (from January 2026), Level 10 basic + DA is ₹89,760 a month, before NPA, HRA and tax; states set their own DA. No reliable figure for a 10-year private dentist was found.

Is there room for new dentists? Seats, MDS and the new regulator
India had 329 dental colleges with 27,926 BDS seats a year in November 2025; 82% of the seats were private. ORF projects a surplus of over 1 lakh dentists within a decade. Odisha’s 2026 Dental Surgeon drive had 124 posts.
Practising alone needs capital: a 2025 dealer guide budgets ₹4.5 lakh for a basic one-chair clinic, and a lender’s guide says ₹5–25 lakh.
In NEET MDS 2026 (held 2 May, result 2 June), 30,389 candidates appeared and 18,244 qualified.
On 19 March 2026 the National Dental Commission (NDC) replaced the Dental Council of India. Its law provides for a National Exit Test (Dental) as the licence to practise, and fee control on half the seats in private and deemed colleges. Check whether either applies to your batch.
Who should not choose BDS
- You are a General candidate with under 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology together in Class 12; a NEET score alone will not make you eligible (NDC circular, September 2026).
- Your family would borrow heavily for a deemed seat. Tuition is about ₹22 lakh at Manipal and ₹35 lakh at D.Y. Patil Navi Mumbai, while AmbitionBox shows dentists earning ₹0.5–7 lakh a year in their first eight years.
- You plan to open a clinic straight after the internship with no savings: even a basic one-chair set-up was budgeted at ₹4.5 lakh in 2025.
- You need a government job soon. India adds 27,926 BDS seats a year; Odisha’s 2026 Dental Surgeon drive had 124 posts.
- You would take a Tamil Nadu government seat and then leave the state: its 2025–26 prospectus asks for 5 years of rural service or ₹5 lakh.
Often confused
- NEET qualifying percentile vs BDS cut-off: are they the same?
- No. The 50th percentile (General, 2026) only lets you register for counselling. A seat depends on rank: in 2025, round 1 All India Quota General seats closed at rank 19,219 at GDC Nagpur.
- Dental Council of India vs National Dental Commission: who regulates dentists now?
- The NDC, since 19 March 2026, with its own Ethics and Dental Registration Board. State dental councils continue, but state governments now appoint their heads. Many college pages still say “DCI-recognised”.
- Deemed university vs government college: is the degree different?
- No, it is the same BDS. The cost differs: about ₹17,000 for the whole course at Maulana Azad against ₹35 lakh tuition at D.Y. Patil Navi Mumbai. MCC allots deemed seats, not your state.
