• PCB students genuinely committed to clinical work — 5.5 years MBBS plus bond/PG years is a decade-long path, not a degree choice
• Students consistently scoring well in NCERT-level Biology and Chemistry, since NEET rewards NCERT mastery over cleverness
• Families who have honestly discussed the private-college scenario: if a government seat is missed, private MBBS can cost ₹60L–1Cr+ total
• Students open to the allied outcomes NEET also unlocks — BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BVSc, nursing — not only MBBS

• Students chasing parental expectations rather than their own interest — the dropout and burnout cost in medicine is higher than in almost any other path
• Those unwilling to consider more than one attempt: 22.8 lakh candidates registered for NEET 2026 against 1,40,664 MBBS seats (only 64,121 in government colleges), and many government-seat winners are second-attempt students
• Families for whom private MBBS fees would mean crippling debt, unless the student is realistically in the government-seat score band (typically 600+ marks for General category)

Exam pattern

180 compulsory MCQs: Physics 45, Chemistry 45, Biology 90 (Botany + Zoology). Total marks: 720. +4 for correct, -1 for wrong, 0 for unanswered. Duration: 180 minutes (3 hours).

AIIMS Delhi and top government colleges need top all-India ranks. General-category government MBBS seats often need 600+ marks, but state quota, category, difficulty, and seats change every year. Qualifying cutoff does not guarantee a government seat.

Qualifying NEET (~50th percentile) means very little — around half the candidates "qualify." A government MBBS seat for General category has typically needed 600+ marks out of 720; state quota, category, and yearly difficulty move this band. Between roughly 450 and 600, the realistic outcomes are private MBBS (very expensive), BDS, or strong AYUSH/allied seats. Below that, reassess honestly rather than defaulting to a repeat year.

The exam fee is modest (roughly ₹1,700–2,000 for General; check the current bulletin). Two-year NEET coaching runs ₹3–6 lakh in metro classroom programmes; residential coaching hubs add ₹1.5–2.5 lakh per year in living costs. Self-study with NCERT + a good test series can stay under ₹30,000. A drop year is normal in NEET (unlike most exams) — but budget it consciously: coaching + living + one year of time.

NEET is an NCERT exam. Biology (90 questions) rewards line-by-line NCERT reading more than any reference book; Physics is where most PCB students lose ranks, so it needs daily numerical practice, not last-month cramming. From October of Class 12, one full 3-hour mock weekly under exam timing. If choosing coaching, choose it for Physics support and test discipline — Biology self-study with NCERT is fully viable.
