How do you get into logistics and supply chain in 2026–27?

After Class 12, the main routes are a BBA, B.Com or B.Voc in logistics, or a short Skill India course. Two central universities teach it directly: Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya, Vadodara (under the Ministry of Railways since the Central Universities (Amendment) Act, 2022) and Indian Maritime University, whose Chennai campus runs a BBA in Logistics, Retailing and E-Commerce (listings ask for 60% in Class 12, 50% in English and age 17–25).

After graduation, most take an MBA in operations or supply chain. CAT 2026, run by IIM Indore, is on 29 November; forms closed on 15 September (fee ₹2,700; ₹1,350 for SC/ST/PwD). IIM Mumbai’s MBA in Operations and Supply Chain Management (OSCM) uses CAT, but its 2025–27 policy admits only engineering or technology graduates, and a few listed degrees such as M.Sc Statistics.

  • Apprenticeship degree: the Logistics Sector Skill Council (LSC) and partner colleges run a B.Com, BBA or BMS in logistics with a government-fixed monthly stipend during the apprenticeship. UGC’s 2025 guidelines treat it as a regular degree.
  • Short courses: LSC job roles such as Warehouse Picker and Inventory Clerk are NSQF Level 3, about 360 hours under PMKVY.
  • Certifications: CILT (UK) certificate and diploma courses run at approved centres such as Kochi and Chennai. The US CSCP exam costs from US$1,450 (2026), before study material.

What do the National Logistics Policy and PM Gati Shakti mean for students?

The National Logistics Policy was launched on 17 September 2022. Its 2030 targets include cutting logistics costs to global benchmarks and reaching the top 25 of the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index; India ranked 38th in 2023. A DPIIT–NCAER study put India’s logistics cost at 7.97% of GDP for 2023–24, below the 13–14% often quoted earlier, because the method differed.

The policy’s three-year review (September 2025) reported logistics courses in over 100 universities and institutes, over 65,000 professionals trained in 2023–25, and new UG and PG programmes through an MoU with Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya. PM Gati Shakti, launched in October 2021, is a separate national master plan for infrastructure projects.

Who should not choose Supply Chain

  • B.Com or BBA graduates set on IIM Mumbai’s OSCM MBA. Its 2025–27 policy takes engineering or technology graduates and only a few other listed degrees.
  • Anyone who needs a high salary straight after a BBA. Delhivery executives in Mumbai report ₹1.8–4 lakh a year.
  • Families planning a ₹20 lakh+ loan for a private operations MBA without checking public options: SIOM costs ₹24.14 lakh with hostel (2026–28); GSV’s MBA costs ₹2,47,800 in year 1.
  • Men who need campus housing for the Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya MBA. Its programme page lists hostel and mess for women only.
  • Students under 60% in Class 12, or under 50% in English, aiming for the IMU BBA.

Often confused

Logistics vs supply chain management: are they the same?
No. Logistics is moving and storing goods: transport, warehousing and delivery. Supply chain management is wider and also covers demand planning, buying from suppliers and stock levels across the chain. A logistics coordinator tracks shipments; a demand planner decides how much stock to hold and where.
Procurement vs logistics jobs: what is the difference?
Procurement (purchase) teams choose suppliers, negotiate prices and place orders. Logistics teams move and store the goods after they are bought.
MBA in Operations vs MBA in Supply Chain: which should I pick?
Operations is wider: it also covers factory processes, quality and project management. Supply chain MBAs focus on planning, sourcing and logistics. IIM Mumbai’s MBA (OSCM) combines both but needs an engineering degree.
