Best thing about it

Meaningful patient impact

Hardest truth

Families may expect quick results.

Occupational Therapy trains students to help children and adults improve daily living, sensory processing, motor skills, workplace function, and rehabilitation after illness or injury. It is a patient-facing allied-health path with growing demand in paediatrics, neuro rehab, and disability services.

Occupational Therapy in detail

Figures checked against the sources listed below on .

How do you get a BOT seat in 2026–27, and do you need NEET?

There is no single national BOT test. Each state or institute runs its own route, and more of them now use NEET UG.

NCAHP, the allied health regulator, had planned NEET-based BPT and BOT admission from 2026–27. On 2 March 2026 it deferred this to 2027–28 at the NTA’s request. If you apply in 2027, write NEET UG 2027.

  • Maharashtra: the State CET Cell fills BOTh seats along with BPTh, BASLP, BP&O and BNYS (“Group C”) through CAP counselling, and candidates report with their NEET UG 2026 admit card. Round 1 results were due on 12 October 2026, delayed over MUHS college affiliations.
  • SVNIRTAR Cuttack, NILD Kolkata and NIEPMD Chennai use a common entrance test of 100 questions in 2 hours. The 2026 seat matrix had 136 BOT seats.
  • PDUNIPPD New Delhi and CMC Vellore announced NEET-based BOT admission for 2026; CMC kept its own test as a fallback.
  • Most colleges run BOT as 4 years of study plus a 6-month internship, as in Nagaland University’s 2024 rules and at NISH.

What does BOT cost at government vs private institutes?

Manipal’s first-year fee is more than five times NILD’s.

How much does an occupational therapist earn in India in 2026?

Government posts follow a fixed pay level. AIIMS now recruits Junior Occupational Therapists as a separate group in its Common Recruitment Exam, with a test on OT subjects (2025 notice).

What does NCAHP registration mean for OTs, in India and abroad?

The NCAHP Act, 2021 makes occupational therapy one of 10 allied and healthcare categories, separate from physiotherapy. Its registration regulations, gazetted on 15 September 2026, create state and national registers with a unique ID and a QR-coded certificate. You renew every 5 years, with at least 15 hours of professional development each year.

Earlier, Maharashtra’s State Council for Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy (set up in 2004) kept the state register, and WFOT’s profile of India says therapists had to register with AIOTA’s Academic Council of Occupational Therapy.

Abroad, the UK needs HCPC registration (IELTS 7.0, no band below 6.5) and Australia needs registration with its Occupational Therapy Board; both assess each overseas degree. Check that your college is in WFOT’s directory of approved programmes.

Who should not choose Occupational Therapy

  • Students who will not write NEET UG: Maharashtra already uses it for BOTh, and NCAHP plans it for BOT nationally from 2027–28.
  • Students counting on a hostel at Seth GS Medical College, Mumbai: there is none for BOTh, and leaving after the cut-off date costs ₹2,00,000 (2025 notices).
  • Anyone whose real goal is psychological testing or counselling of children; that is RCI-registered clinical psychology.
  • Students set on working in the UK who cannot reach IELTS 7.0 with no band below 6.5.
  • Families taking a large loan for a private seat: Manipal’s first year costs ₹3.24 lakh (2026), while New Delhi OT pay reports start near ₹2 lakh a year (2025).

Often confused

BOT vs BPT: which should I choose?
Both take about 4.5 years at most colleges (BPT moves to 5 on the new NCAHP pattern), share Maharashtra’s counselling and the same NEET plan, but they are separate NCAHP categories and separate jobs. In 2025 AIIMS split Junior OT recruitment from physiotherapy, with an OT-only syllabus.
BOT vs Psychology: which is better for working with children?
An OT builds a child’s handwriting, self-care, sensory and motor skills. A clinical psychologist assesses and counsels, and needs an RCI-recognised postgraduate course plus RCI registration (a CRR number). A psychology bachelor’s alone does not let you practise; BOT does.
Occupational Therapy vs Operation Theatre (OT) Technology: same thing?
No, though both get called “OT”. Operation Theatre Technology trains you to assist in surgery. AIIMS runs it as a separate course, and NCAHP files it under surgical and anaesthesia technology, not occupational therapy.

Off-campus reality

Off-campus success depends on clinical postings, case logs, supervision, and referrals.

Eligibility

12th science with PCB is commonly required; some institutes accept PCMB. In 2026 Maharashtra (CET Cell), PDUNIPPD New Delhi and CMC Vellore admitted on NEET UG scores, and NCAHP plans NEET for BOT nationally from 2027–28. The national institutes (SVNIRTAR, NILD, NIEPMD) run their own common entrance test.

Reality check

Daily reality

OTs spend the day assessing function, planning activities, guiding patients/families, documenting progress, and adapting home, school, or work tasks.

Work culture

Therapy work is hands-on, relationship-heavy, and often slow-progress. Patience is essential.

Competition

Moderate; fewer students know OT, but good clinical seats are limited.

Saturation

Demand is growing in metros and rehab centres; awareness is still low in many towns.

Layoffs

Healthcare rehab roles are relatively stable, though NGO/school contracts may vary.

AI disruption

AI can suggest plans, but functional assessment and hands-on therapy remain human.

Frequently asked questions

Q: What does an occupational therapist do?

OTs help people improve daily activities such as dressing, writing, attention, sensory processing, work tasks, mobility adaptation, and independent living.

Q: Is OT the same as physiotherapy?

No. Physiotherapy focuses more on movement, pain, and physical rehabilitation. OT focuses on functional independence in daily life, school, work, and home environments.

Q: Is BOT good for girls?

BOT is suitable for any student with patience, empathy, science basics, and interest in rehabilitation. Gender should not decide the choice.

Q: Can OTs work abroad?

Yes, but international practice requires country-specific licensing, exams, supervised hours, and immigration steps.

Q: Is NEET compulsory for BOT admission in 2026?

Not nationally; NCAHP deferred it to 2027–28. But Maharashtra’s CET Cell used NEET UG 2026 for BOTh, and PDUNIPPD and CMC Vellore announced NEET-based admission.

Q: What is an occupational therapist’s salary at AIIMS?

Junior Occupational Therapist is a Level 6 post: ₹35,400 basic, or ₹56,640 a month with 60% DA (from January 2026), before HRA and deductions.

Q: Is registration compulsory for occupational therapists in India?

It is becoming so. NCAHP’s regulations gazetted on 15 September 2026 set up state and national registers, renewed every 5 years. Maharashtra already keeps a state register through its OT and PT council.

Q: Which BOT colleges have the lowest fees?

Central national institutes and CMC Vellore: SVNIRTAR charged ₹44,370 in year 1 (2025), NILD ₹61,000 (2023–24) and CMC about ₹37,550 (2025).
